Introduction to Increment
What is Increment? Instead of a delay where
your clock waits so many seconds before it starts counting down at the start of
each move, increment adds time to
your clock at the end of each
move. It is intended to allow more
time for the game to be decided on the board by the players rather than by the
clock, while still allowing games to stick to a time schedule. Without increment, players are excused
from notating when either one has under five minutes remaining in a sudden
death time control. With increment,
technically there is no sudden death, therefore
notation is required until the end of the game.
Why Increment?
Increment has been adopted as the standard by FIDE. It’s starting to show up more
often in USCF tournaments, and very likely will soon be required in tournament
sections which are to be FIDE-rated.
We’re providing this opportunity for players to gain some
experience with the difference in time management under this system.
